Sid Griffin
Filthy McNasty's London 24 July 2000
24 July saw Sid Griffin back at Filthy McNasty's in Islington following last year's talk on Gram Parsons. This time, Sid was there to offer musical accompaniment to Record Collector's PeterDoggett who was there to talk about his new book Are You Ready For The Country which examined the relationship between country and rock music since the 1950s. Sadly the evening turned into a fiasco. Peter Doggett started okay and after talking about The Byrds' experiences when they visited Nashville, introduced Sid who gave a quick acoustic version of Drug Store Truck Drivin' Man, which was apparently based on this visit. Peter continued and obligingly took a question from the audience about Elvis. However, the questioner was not satisfied by the answer and laboured his point to the stage where he became, if not aggressive, then certainly hostile and was eventually escorted from the venue. This clearly unnerved Peter, though he carried on. However, after Sid had run through Final Wild Son (after Peter's references to Jerry Lee Lewis) things got worse. The other half of the pub was host to a private party with loud music (ironically, Elvis) which drowned out Peter's attempts to continue his narrative. Despite some attempts to cut the noise it quickly became apparent that he couldn't continue and the host rather disgustedly called off the event. There was never a chance that both events could have co-existed and the management at Filthy McNasty's will need to sort out their priorities if they are to continue hosting reading/live music events at the venue.
