Past Members and Friends of The Coal Porters

Rob Childs - played guitar and pedal steel and shared the odd vocal as well. Particularly prominent on the Gram Parsons Tribute tour when his skills came to the fore, as seen and heard on the Gram Parsons Tribute Concert CD and video. Left the band in the summer of 1999.
Will Morrison - fairly quiet and short term drummer who replaced Dave Roberts. Replaced by Dave Morgan in the band in 1999. Featured mostly on the EP Roulette CD.
Bob Stone - long time keyboard player and backing vocalist, who joined after Andy Steele left. Heavily featured on Los London, as well as occasionally on Little Victories, EP Roulette and The Gram Parsons Tribute Concert which he played after leaving the band. Also the proud owner of his own solo album called Private.
Joff Lowson - restrained but stylish guitarist who took over when John Bennett left the band. Featured mostly on Los London and EP Roulette, he is now part of The Next Band who with Sid's help have recorded a bluegrass version of Final Wild Son.
Dave Woodhead - never really a Coal Porter as such, but has probably played on as many records and gigs as anyone else. Dave lends his brass talents (on trumpet or horn) on Land Of Hope And Crosby and Los London and has played with the band live on many occasions, including adding penny whistle to some of the more acoustic sets. Also a key player in The Positively Testcard.
Wes McGhee - solo country/tex-mex artist in his own right, Wes often sat in on guitar when The Coal Porters were "between guitarists" and has also joined the band onstage for the odd encore or two. He has also helped out on Sid's Little Victories and Los London. Wes has also recorded his own version of Everybodys Fault But Mine.
Kate St John - formerly of Dream Academy and a well established solo artist as well as being Mrs Sid Griffin, Kate has often supported The Coal Porters by playing sax or oboe at gigs and has appeared on Los London, Little Victories and Land Of Hope And Crosby, as well as recording her own version of Sid's Distant Trains.
Dave Roberts - long time drummer, perhaps best known for his share of the vocals when he and Sid sang If I Were A Bramble And You Were A Rose. Went on to play in Hillman Minx, receiving notable airplay from Radio 1 and supporting Hanson at Wembley!
John Bennett - another long time player, this time guitarist, who became one of the initial main members of the band when Sid based the band in the UK. Appears on Land Of Hope And Crosby and Los London and often accompanied Sid on his solo outings, before leaving the band to join the High Llamas with Sean O'Hagan.
Andy Steele - on/off keyboard player from the band's early UK years. Appears mainly on Land Of Hope And Crosby as well as often sharing the vocals on the band's live rendition of Song For The Dreamers.
Kevin Morris - short term drummer from the early 90s. Formerly (and subsequently) with Dr Feelgood, Kevin appears on Land Of Hope And Crosby and played with the band live before Dave Roberts became a more permanent fixture.
Rob Allum - Billy Bragg/High Llamas drummer who often played live with the band when no permanent drummer could be found. Also appears on record on Los London and Land Of Hope And Crosby.
Ian Thomson - original bassist, from Newcastle. Remained with the band when Sid came over to the UK. Appears on the band's first three albums as well as producing Whoah, Big Fella! and had a cameo appearance on Little Victories as well. Now plays with Lindisfarne.
Chris Buessem - original guitarist from when the band were based in the States. Appears on Rebels Without Applause, Land Of Hope And Crosby and Los London, and has played with Sid when he goes over to the States for gigs.
Andy Kaulkin - one time keyboard player from the States, appears on all of the bands first three full length releases. Still in the music business, as president of US label Epitaph Records!
Billy Block - heavily featured drummer from the band's US years, who also appears on the band's first three albums. Now apparently in Nashville, managing young bands.
Greg Sowders - who he?! Formerly of The Long Ryders and the original Coal Porters drummer. Left the band to work in music publishing, Greg has played with Sid in the States since and appears on record on Rebels Without Applause, Land Of Hope And Crosby and Los London.
...and many others too numerous to mention!
